GLP 101 - A Quick Overview

NOTE: This post isn't meant to be all encompassing and I'm skipping over some facts that you've likely already heard from a million different sources to save you time. I've also highlighted some areas that people tend to focus on the most.

Let's clear up some confusion and understand terminology.
  • Ozempic is a brand, not a drug.
  • The main ingredient in Ozempic is called Semaglutide.
  • Semaglutide belongs to a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists (RA)

Currently there are two main weight management ingredients - Semaglutide & Tirzepatide. Below, I've outlined some basic differences for you.

Semaglutide (known as Ozempic & Wegovy)
  • is a single agonist, GLP-1.
  • generally cheaper.
  • once-weekly injection, typically.
  • in some, more pronounced side effects.

Tirzepatide (known as Mounjaro & Zepbound)
  • is a dual agonist, both GLP-1 and a GIP.
  • little more expensive.
  • once-weekly injection, typically.
  • in general, fewer side effects.

*more versions of these drugs are being developed and tested and once they become more mainstream I'll add them to this post.

A SIMPLE TIMELINE OF EVENTS
Remember this is a process. While everyone's process will be different this is what I've seen...
  • Start using a GLP-1, find the dose that works for you (1-3 months)

  • Stay consistent and use until you've reached desired results (variable)

  • Consider reducing dose to see how body reacts (1-3 months)

  • Stay until something changes and live happily

I hope this quick post helps you in your journey.
